Salmon Angling

River Moy
Water levels and angling effort have been very low over the past week, despite this however, there were 133 salmon recorded on the system for the week. On the Moy Fishery 17 salmon were caught, with eleven from the Ridge Pool including one of approximately 5lbs for Roy Morrin, Co. Donegal. Fintan Keenan, Dublin had one just over 4lbs while Mike Sutherland, Scotland, had two on fly, releasing one, his best fish weighing 8lbs. The Cathedral Beat produced four for the week, with two for Gareth Byrne, Dublin on the fly which were released.

Things were relatively slow on the Ballina Salmon Anglers' waters, while at the Mount Falcon Fishery, 19 were recorded for the week, with Mark Geesink, Holland enjoying great sport with eight salmon on the bubble and fly over three days. The rest of the mid-river fisheries had a slow week, with each producing just a few salmon each. However, good sport was had at Rinanney, where 26 were caught, with ten landed on the Foxford Town waters. Cloongee recorded nine for the week, six of which were released. Charles and Guillame Schringer, Luxemburg both landed grilse of 4lbs at Cloongee, take on the spinner and fly. The action was also relatively slow on the East Mayo Anglers' water, where just 12 were caught, seven of those released. Roy Moran, N.Ireland, landed three 3lbs grilse on fly at East Mayo.

Anglers are reminded that as of the 1st of September, the daily bag limit for salmon is now one salmon per day and that the River Deel is now closed to anglers.

Ballisodare
Water levels have been very low on the Ballisodare River of late, however fish are still moving in and out on the tides. Very few anglers fished over the past week, as a result only nine salmon were caught, mostly on the worm. Some decent fish around the 7lbs mark were among those caught.

Burrishoole
A poor week for angling again this week with a total of just eight salmon caught, four ranched and four wild, with all the wild salmon released. The wild fish weighed in at around 4.5lbs while the ranched fish averaged 7lbs. The lucky anglers were Sean and Michael Smith, with three wild and one ranched. Ronan Walsh, Dublin had one ranched, Toby Gibbons, Westport, had a wild and a ranched fish while Sean O'Malley, Westport, had one ranched. Nine sea trout were also caught and released by Sean and Michael Smith.

Lough Corrib
Donal Connolly from Nonaim Lodge was in touch to report that fishing over the last week or so has been a little inconsistent, with good and bad days at times, but it does seem as if the fish are starting to get a little more interested as the slightly more autumnal weather slowly takes effect, with a lot more fish moving to the fly.
Taylor Vard had a good day with one grilse of about 4 lbs and several trout, the best weighing in at 3lbs, while dapping. Paul Joyce celebrated the approaching new school year with a lovely 2.5lbs trout also while dapping, and moved many other large fish. Randolf Starr, visiting from the US, had one trout for about 1.25lbs on wet fly. Another US visitor, Rob Hodgkins had 2 trout for about 2.4lbs while dapping. Brian & Werner Spier from Germany had 2 trout for about 2.25lbs while dapping over a couple of hours.
Donal himself had 3 trout on wet fly for approx 3.75lbs for a day's wet fly fishing. All fish were released.

Over the last few days Donal found the trout were beginning to move more freely to the fly but were not quite "on" as they tended to simply pluck at the fly or come short, but they were beginning to show interest and as September begins this is a positive sign for improved fishing. As Donal says "Get out there and enjoy a few hours on the water, as this is the final month (and it can be a very good month for fishing) before we pack the boats and fishing rods away for another year."

Lough Inagh
Fishery manager Colin Folan reports that 3 salmon, 66 sea trout, 13 brown trout and 2 char were landed this week for 32 rod days. It was a relatively quiet week with all the angling taking place on the lake. The water levels in the river have all but gone and we could do with a top up. Lough Inagh has been fishing best in the afternoons lately, which is not usually the norm, and the sea trout seem to be more plentiful in the southern end of the lough, especially in Schoolhouse Bay. The Cornamona Anglers had their annual visit to Lough Inagh on Saturday, and 8 rods landed 20 sea trout. IFI fishery officer Kevin Kerrigan had a day to remember, landing the Grand Slam of Inagh, which comprises the 4 species (salmon, sea trout, brown trout and char) on a single day.

Cian Hanley (Galway) landed a fine salmon of 11.25lbs on a Jungle Bunny. Michael Heery and William Hamilton (Dublin) had 13 sea trout to 2.25lbs for a day on Inagh. Top flies for sea trout this week werethe Green Dabbler, Green Peter, Connemara Black, Kate McClaren and Bibio. Only 4 weeks left now folks

Kylemore Abbey Fishery
Nigel Rush reports that the week ending 31st August accounted for just 12 salmon for 23.5 rod days. Reasonable water levels last Sunday saw regular anglers Geoffrey Fitzjohn and Seamus O'Neil land 7 fish between them for the day. Levels from there on dropped, and with the balmy weather conditions nothing else was landed until Saturday, when first time angler to Kylemore Paul Mason landed 2 fish from the Upper Lake, and Seamus O'Neil landed a further 3 fish to 6lbs from the river.

Neil Spellacy from Moycullen with a nice fresh sea trout taken on the Middle Lake at Kylemore Abbey, 31 August 2013.

With the last day of the month falling on a Saturday calculations for the month of August show that 88 salmon/grilse were accounted for, and 91 sea trout for 112 rod days. This leaves us with 189 salmon for the season so far - just 11 more for the magical 200!

Regular anglers Neil Spellacy and Kevin Crowley hit the lakes on Saturday for a day's sea trout angling which accounted for 10 trout to 1.5lbs. It was possibly the first day of the season that you could see that fishing would have to be good on the lakes with good constant cool westerlies. Whilst landing a small sea trout, Kevin's rod bent double and the reel was sent screaming... a ferox trout of about 5lbs had latched on to the sea trout and was not going to let it go. Nearly at the net, the fish thought better of capture and released the trout seemingly unharmed by its ordeal.

Fish are still entering the river. Last Tuesday at least 10 salmon were clearly visible at Derryinver Bridge one of which was lost after a short tussle.

Four week left... make the most of it!
