The trout angling season opened on Lough Conn on 15 February and a reasonable number of boats were fishing on opening day and in the following days.  Several anglers reported trout on the first day of the season. However, Michael Rutledge, Lahardaun, fishing together with Sean Goulding and Michael O’Toole, both from Dublin, enjoyed an exceptional opening day with 10 trout, best at 1.5 lbs. The three anglers were fishing wet flies and landed 8 of their 10 fish in the first hour. Water levels on Conn are dropping and this should favour angling if weather conditions become more settled over the coming weeks.

Prospects for salmon fishing on the Moy are also looking good with suitable water levels above and below the outflow of Lough Conn. All fisheries on the Moy are open and operating as usual except the Ballina Salmon Angler’s beat upstream of the weir.  Anglers are welcome and invited to cast a line on the River Moy!

The Fisheries Board is still offering free fishing on the Ridge Pool up until the first salmon is caught there. All legitimate methods are allowed except prawn and shrimp.
