Carrowmore Lake

Carrowmore continued to fish well this week with another six spring salmon recorded bringing the total for the past two weeks, including released fish, to fifteen. On 26 March, Declan Dooley, Dublin, caught a salmon of 9.5 lbs., which he returned. On the same day, Frank Dooley, also from Dublin, caught two, both weighing 9 lbs. He retained one and released the second in accordance with the law.  On 30 March, Toby Gibbons, Westport, had one which also weighed 9 lbs.  The following day, Declan Dooley again scored with a fine fish of 10.5 lbs. On 1 April, a German visitor caught another salmon, this one weighing in at 7.5 lbs.  With the present weather conditions predicted to continue, the prospects for Carrowmore over the Easter period look excellent.

Lough Beltra

Lough Beltra, which is open on a Catch & Release basin only, produced two more springers this week. Both were caught by Desmond Desmonds, England, one weighing about 7 lbs. and the second at about 9.5 lbs. Both fish were, of course, released.

River Moy

The Moy is known to have produced a number of salmon this week but it has not been possible to get details. The river is now in perfect condition for fishing and good numbers of salmon have been observed all the way from Ballina to Cloongee where at least two fish have been lost.

Loughs Conn and Cullin

Lough Conn had a quite week with few anglers going out due to the sunny, calm conditions. However, those that persevered caught trout. John Walsh, Cloghans, had four trout, on duck flies and nymphs, with the best at 2.5 lbs. The same angler had a fine trout weighing almost 5 lbs. on Lough Cullin, on a duck fly, on St. Patrick’s Day.  Joe McBride and Fred Finlay had one weighing 1.25 lbs.

Bilberry Lough

Bilberry & Lannagh Angling Club held the first competition of the season on Sunday with 13 anglers participating. Six anglers caught 9 trout with the competition won by Shane Walsh with 3 trout weighing 2.10 lbs. Mat Fahy was second with 2 trout weighing 2.06 lbs.  The club’s next completion will be fished on 29 April and new members are welcome.

Second in the junior section was Richard Kelly with a fish of 6 lbs. The senior event was won by Liam Flanagan with three pike weighing 22.5 lbs.
