The Lagduff Fishery on the Owenduff River, Ballycroy, has produced the first salmon of the season in the North Western Fisheries Region. The fresh fish, weighing 8 lbs., was caught by English visitor, Alexander Mills, on Wednesday last, 21 March on this “fly only” fishery. Two days later, second salmon was taken, and returned, on the same fishery by another guest, Andrew Glover.

Lough Beltra produced its first salmon of the season on Thursday, 22 March. This was a fine salmon on 10.25 lbs. but it was, of course, returned to the water in accordance with the regulations for this fishery.

Carrowmore Lake produced its first salmon on Saturday, 24 March, when Declan Foley, Dublin, landed a lovely 8 lbs. fish. A second salmon, also around 8 lbs. was caught by John Bramble, Co. Offlay and a third was caught and released by Declan Dooly, Dublin.

The Board has also received a number of unconfirmed reports of salmon having been caught on the Moy which is now dropping fast.  The upper stretches, on the Cloongee and East Mayo fisheries, should be in perfect order in the coming days if the present dry spell continues.
