River Moy

The Moy system accounted for a reported catch of 26 salmon for the week

On Gannon’s, Bernard Mannion from Castlerea took a salmon at 6.75 lbs. on spinner while on the East Mayo Angler’s Association water 6 salmon were reported for the week, 2 of which were released. Amongst the successful anglers were Seamus Commons, Bohola, with a 5 lbs. fish (released) on fly and Ian Guegan who caught and released a fine 10 lbs. salmon. Fabrice Thanny, France had a 6 lbs. salmon while spinning. Elsewhere, 5 salmon have been reported from Lough Conn.

Please note that the Fisheries Board is still offering free fishing on the Ridge Pool up until the first salmon is caught there. With water levels dropping well, the first one may be caught very soon so don’t miss out on the opportunity to be the captor.

Lough Conn

Fishing picked up slightly during the week on Lough Conn and about 55 anglers landed 43 trout over 68 rod days with an average weight of .92 lbs.

The Lough Conn & Cullin Angler’s held a club competition during the week with 15 anglers taking part and a total of nine trout taken. Kay McBride, Dublin, won the event with a nice fish for 2.25 lbs.

Martin & Florence McDonald from Co. Antrim, guests of Pontoon Bridge Hotel, had seven trout over two days, averaging 1 lbs., on Olive Bumbles and olive nymph patterns. At Cloghans, Welsh angler John Roberts and his friend had 4 trout for 7 lbs. with best at 2.25 lbs. Declan O’Sullivan, Co. Kerry, and his wife Lily took 3 trout for 4.5 lbs. on Sooty Olives and Fiery Brown patterns, while local anglers Seamus Kelly and Murt Cawley caught 5 trout, all of which were returned. Elsewhere, Ted Lynch, Co. Galway, took a nice trout for 2 lbs. on a large minnow.

Ballisodare River

The Ballisodare Fishery produced a total of 10 salmon (5 released) for the week. Richard Waters had the best fish with an 11 lbs. salmon caught on the worm, while Gerry Quinn caught a 10-pounder, also on the worm. Seanie Maye caught and released two salmon and lady angler, Heather Chambers, landed a nice 6 lbs. salmon which fell to an Ally’s Shrimp fly. The river was high on several days with no fish caught but after the current dry spell signs are very promising for the weeks ahead.

Lough Beltra

Angling conditions remained very good on the Lough during the week with 4 salmon caught and released. Dr. Desmonds, a French guest of Newport House, was successful again and had another 3 salmon between 7 lbs. and 11 lbs. Finnish lady angler, Emily Ploeg, did also very well with a fine 11.5 lbs. salmon.

Please note that Lough Beltra and the Newport River are fished under a "Catch & Release" basis until the 11th of May following which they may be fished in accordance with normal regulations.
