River Moy

The Moy system accounted for a reported catch of 411 salmon for the week of which at least 115 were released. This brought the catch for 2007, to date, to 8,302 with just a week remaining in the season. The Moy Fishery produced 15 salmon for the week with seven of these coming off the Ridge Pool and four off the Cathedral Beat. Elsewhere, the best fishing was to be had on Mount Falcon, where 102 salmon were reported, of which 76 were released, Coolcronan, Byrne’s, Gannon’s, Rinnaney and East Mayo. The best fish reported was one of 12.5 lbs. which was taken on prawn at Rinnanney while Phil Cooke, UK, had a fine salmon of 10 lbs. on fly on the East Mayo water.

 

Moy Estuary

 

A total of 36 trout were reported from the estuary where conditions were poor for much of the time due to water discolouration resulting from floods.

 

Lough Conn

With an improvement in conditions, fishing picked up somewhat on Conn and there were more anglers on the lake with a few end of season competitions taking place. Pontoon Bridge hotel revived their previously popular end of season event which was fished by 46 anglers, from seven countries, in very windy condition, on Saturday. The event was won by Peadar O’Maolain, Moycullen, who had two trout weighing 2.76 lbs. The heaviest fish was taken by Frank Bairead, also from Moycullen, who had a fine trout of 2.34 lbs. The prize for best international angler went to Guy Verberne, Holland, who had a trout of 1.51 lbs. Kieran Connolly took the Des & Eugen Bourke Memorial Cup for best boatman. The Murphy Boat Hire and Murphy’s Pub competition was fished on Sunday and it was won by Michael Noone with a trout of 1.5 lbs. Second was Conor Moran who had a trout of 1.25 lbs and Mick Sweeney as third with a trout of 1 lb. Elsewhere on Conn, Ronnie Cox, Ballina, had five trout for 7 lbs. with the best at 1.5 lbs. Fishing with Kelly Boat Hire, Peter Dawson and Mark Ashford, UK had three trout weighing 4.5 lbs . UK TV producer, Damonn Pettison had a trout of 2.5 lbs. on Lough Cullin.

A total of 125 anglers caught 62 trout, averaging .85 lbs., in 130 rod days. Best flies were the Bibio, Green Peter, Olives and Olive Bumble, Invicta, Octopus and various sedge patterns.

Owenmore River

There was very good fishing on the Owenmoe this week with a total of 78 salmon reported of which 56 were returned to the water. Bob and Ed McCarthy caught 16 salmon of which they returned 14. John and Gordan Long caught 21 for the week and returned all but one.

Burrishoole Fishery

Fishing was slow this week in the Burrishoole even though there was still a good show of fish in Lough Furnace. Michael Righton, UK, had a grilse of 3.5 lbs and Pat Canavan, Cavan, had one weighing 4 lbs

 

Ballin Lough

 

A total of 18 trout (of which 13 were returned) were caught by 11 rods. Oliver Corcoran, Newport, caught 6 of which he returned 4 and his best weighed 3.5 lbs. Best flies were the Vivas and Green Peter. The season On Ballin Lough continues to 31 October.
