River Moy

The River Moy saw no significant change in water levels during the week and with bad weather now forecast, it looks set to rise significantly in coming days. With anglers now venturing to a variety of fisheries on the Moy, fish are being reported even further upstream.

The Ballina Salmon Anglers beat again produced salmon, this time for Noel Maloney who had a 5 lbs fish on the worm. At Rinanney on the Foxford Salmon Anglers water Gerry Guilfoyle of the Mid-lands caught a fine springer. The best fish of the week was caught by Jerry Deane, Castlebar who had a fine 14 lbs salmon on the spinner on the East Mayo Anglers water.

Lough Gill

Pat Kennedy had success on Lough Gill on Saturday the 24th, catching a nice 8lbs salmon while trolling off Castle Point.

Pike Angling

Changing air pressure and a slight rise in water temperatures throughout the week have encouraged pike to take more freely with some great catches being reported. The lakes of the Manulla and Castlebar areas produced some excellent pike, with anglers reporting catches of several pike per day to the dead bait weighing at between 8 and 14lbs.

Markus Müller of the NWRFB also had great success on these waters over the weekend, with a fine pike of approximately 22 lbs and 102cm length coming to the fly. The magnificent fish was tempted with a yellow/orange pike streamer, fished with an intermediate sinking line. After being quickly photographed (not an easy task when boat fishing on ones own) the pike was safely released. This catch highlights the growing number of anglers embracing pike fly fishing, where the reward can be prize fish of this size.

Local pike angling guide Kenny Sloan also had success on these waters when guiding a party of visiting anglers. They reported good fishing with lures with a few double figure pike being caught up to 20lbs weight. Kenny can be contacted on ksloan@eircom.net
