Galway Fishery
Spring salmon have started to appear again in Galway, with 2 good fish landed this week. The first salmon on fly was landed by Michael Leonard, a long time visitor to Galway, who has been putting in the hours recently even in high water. Michael landed his 9.5lbs fish on a tube fly, and met 2 other spring fish on the day.

Local angler Sean O'Toole also landed a 9.5lbs salmon on shrimp, Sean is well known in Galway angling circles and it was only a matter of time before he landed one this season. Sean was followed by Bert Lynch, another local angler, who landed a fine 12-pounder on Tuesday, also on shrimp.
There are currently 4 gates open on the weir, although levels may rise again with the forecast rain, but the appearance of fresh fish in the river is a great sign for the next few weeks.

Western Lakes
Fishing picked up on Mask over the last week, as hatches started to pick up, with the first sightings of olives in Cushlough Bay on Monday. Cork anglers Ger Linehan and Pat Winning had four nice fish on Tuesday (best fish 2lbs). Local anglers Noel Moran and Kevin Sheridan also fished Mask on Monday in calm conditions and landed two fish (best fish 1.75lbs).

Ronan Cusack also landed a good fish on Tuesday evening of 3.75lbs.

David Hall and boat partner Frank Doyle fished out of Hall's Angling Centre on Sunday and enjoyed excellent fishing along the Inishowen shore. David reported huge hatches of small dark sedge with trout freely rising all day. The mild calm conditions of the past week resulted in good early hatches of duckfly in selected areas around Lough Mask.
Over on Corrib, the fishing picked up over the weekend in time for the Oughterard Development 50 competition, held by the Regatta Club. The competition, a team event fished over 2 days, was won by Mike Faherty and Kevin Molloy, with 6 trout for 6.79kg. Martin butler and Gerry Molloy were 2nd, with 7 trout for 6.65kg, and Dai Williams and Dylan Williams were 3rd, with 6 trout for 6.0kg. Over the 2 days, 56 anglers landed 97 trout for 82.927kg, with many more undersize fish returned. Most fish were taken on buzzer nymphs.

Over on the Cornamona-Greenfields side, 23 anglers reported 24 trout in 37 rod-days, mostly taken on buzzers, as duckfly hatches have yet to really start in earnest. A Garda West competition was held in Greenfields, with Michael Bradley taking 1st place, with 4 trout for 5.5lbs. Seamus Kelly was 2nd, with a good trout of 1.75lbs. Elsewhere, Bill Tully from Tuam landed a nice trout of 3lbs on fly, while John Summerville and a friend landed 5 trout for 9.5lbs for their day out.

Fishing guide Tomasz "Tomi" Kurman from the Corrib Predator Team reported on a great trip trolling for ferox trout with his friend Sebastian. Sebastian had never fished for trout before, and within a couple of hours he landed his first ever trout, a magnificent ferox of 83.5cm, weighing 7.2kg (almost 16lbs). Being a novice it took a while for Tomi to explain to him that this was slightly larger than average! A couple of horus later Tomi landed an even bigger fish, another specimen ferox of 88cm, weighing 8.5kg (almost 19lbs!). The third fish of the day was, as Tomi put it, "only a tiddler" at 76cm and 5.45kg (12lbs). The lads lost another fish before calling it a day.
