Kylemore

Fishery manager Nigel Rush reports last week was quiet at Kylemore, with hot sultry weather hampering angling. Just 2 salmon were landed for 9 rod-days for the week. Better angling conditions with rain forecast for this week should see an improvement in catches. Already this year the fishery is 4 weeks ahead of last year's salmon catch, with 111 salmon landed to date, so runs have been very good.

Lough Inagh

Colin Folan reports that the last 2 weeks have been very testing for anglers here, as the water levels dropped and the water temperature rose significantly. Highlight of the last two weeks was John Fish from the UK, who caught and released a brown Trout of 10 - 12lbs on a Temple Dog Tube from Lough Inagh. There was no wind or cloud that day, and the battle lasted for half an hour. At time of writing we have rising water, which was badly needed and with September only around the corner, all looks well for a grand finale to the season. The yearly catch for sea trout at the moment is 764. The last time there was more caught was pre - 1988, ie the collapse due to sea lice infestation. The salmon total so far this season is 58, compared to last year's 68 for the same time frame. We have over a dozen char landed this season too.

Lough Corrib

Eamon Walsh reports that very few anglers ventured out on Corrib last week. Those who did, however, were well rewarded. In the Oughterard area, John Boland from Clare had 4 trout for 6lbs, of which 3 were released. Fan Garratt and P. Molloy had 9 fish for a day's fishing on wet and dry fly.

Noel Kerins and Paddy Curran also had 9 trout for 13lbs, returning 5, while Mar McGauley had 3 trout to the dap.
18 anglers took part in the Kilbeg angling club mixed bag competition on Sunday the 19th, with poor results. 2 trout were captured along with 8 perch and 1 pike. The winner was TJ Egan with one trout weighing 1.14kg.

The Headford "Headfest" ran a youth competition over the weekend; 10 young anglers caught 3 trout and 2 perch. Oisin Reilly came out on top with 2 trout for 2lb 2oz on caught on Green Hopper and Gorgeous George flies.

Sea Angling

The 5th leg of the Grauvell West Coast Shore League took place on Sunday on Keel beach in Achill, hosted by Corrane SAC. A beautiful clean surf greeted competitors when they arrived, with no weed in sight. Weather was perfect for the first 3 hours, with warm sunshine tempered by an onshore breeze, but this was followed by torrential rain for the last hour. Fishing was quite good, with good numbers of turbot and the off flounder coming in throughout the competition.

The overall winner was Corrane angler Fiachra McKenna, with 14 fish for 203 points. The winner of Zone A was Stephen O'Sullivan, with 7 fish for 166 points, followed by Kevin Crowley with 7 fish for 156 points, and Andrew McDermott with 11 fish for 129 points (all Galway Bay SAC members).
Zone B was won by Newport SAC's Shane Gilvarry, with 12 fish for 144 points. Second place went to Joe Bernie Jr., (Lisdoonvarna Fanore SAC) with 9 fish for 132 points, and third was Ed Kilroy (Newport SAC) with 10 fish for 131 points.

The result leaves Stephen O'Sullivan in first place in the league on 478 points, with Ed Kilroy nipping at his heels, just 2 points in arrears. Fiachra McKenna is in third, closely followed by Peter Atkins and Declan Gallagher. With just 3 legs left in the league, and competitors able to drop their 2 worst scores, it's all to play for.

The next leg will be held in Mullaghmore on the 2nd of September.

Max Couque, skipper of the Leaca Rua, emailed to report on good fishing over the last week. They had good tope fishing last week, with the good weather a big help, with fish boated up to 35-40lbs. All fish were tagged and released again.

Max and fellow skipper Kevin MacGabhann hosted the 7th edition of the 22.50 fishing competition last week end, with the 2 boats fishing over 2 days. For the first day, Kevin went fishing pollack and cod and his group recorded 4 nice cod and plenty of pollack, some grey gurnard, pouting and mackerel. Max's group targeted tope and landed 3 of them, with the best fish just 10.5lbs

The second day, Max went fishing pollack, and tried for ling and cod, while Kevin was trying to get a bull buss bigger than 10.5lbs but no luck. Colleen Daly on Max's boat had one ling of 8lbs and 6 different species (dab, pollack, pouting, mackerel, grey gurnard and ling), but no cod. Kevin's anglers landed a 6.5 lbs bull buss, 4 ling to 4lbs, dogfish, pollack, pouting, poor cod and mackerel.

Liam Daly won the cup with the biggest fish, his 10.5lbs tope. His daughter Colleen won the Ling trophy. Kevin's group won the cod trophy and the species trophy. Between the 2 boats there were 14 species landed over the 2 days.
