General Information

On Saturday 1 September (12.00-3.00pm) the Jaguar's Drivers Club will visit the Museum.  There will be approx. 25 SS/Jaguar cars, mostly from the 1930's to 1950's but with a few more modern cars. Come along to see these beautiful cars which will be parked throughout the grounds of Turlough Park.

Join poet Terry McDonagh and uilleann piper Diarmaid Moynihan for a performance combining poetry and music.     Location - Education Room

Reminiscence Workshop. Socialising in the Past
To celebrate Positive Ageing Week, Michael Fox will run a reminiscence workshop on the theme of social occasions in the past (Rambling Houses, Storytelling, Wakes, Fairs, etc.) Adult   Location - Education Room

Come along to meet the group or join them for the day by bringing your own knitting, crochet, felting etc. All Ages

Take this opportunity to view the Stardome from the Armagh Planetarium and enjoy a trip around the most fascinating objects in the night sky.

Heritage Week 2007
Saturday 25th - Sunday 2nd  September
European Heritage Days is a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union in which over forty countries participate each year. Its main aims are to promote awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage. In  Ireland we celebrate a full week of events. The National Museum of Ireland County Life join in this celebration with a full programme of events including free guided tours of the museum. See listings below for further details.

Talk. History of the GAA
Join Mike Cronin, author of Sport and Nationalism in Ireland, for a talk explaining how the GAA came into being and why it has been so significant in Irish history. Age 7+

SATURDAY CLUB
Starting Saturday 6th October - Every Saturday in October: 2.00pm - 4.00pm 
Mask Making.
This October we invite you to learn about Mask Making with members of the Education & Outreach Department and the Mayo Arts squad. The club runs for four weeks and will take place on Saturday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm at  the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS

Whitewash & Thatch Exhibition
Following its huge success in The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, this exhibition is now showing in Dublin at the National Museum of Ireland - Decorative Arts & History, Collins Barracks, Dublin 7. Whitewash & Thatch is an exhibition explores the materials, craftsmanship and form of traditional Irish houses. On display are a range of ground plans, elevations, crayon drawings and watercolours of houses which were surveyed in the 1930s and 1940s. The exhibition includes the work of Swedish scholars, Åke Campbell (1891-1957) and Albert Nilsson [Eskeröd] (1904-1987) who were invited to survey traditional houses in Ireland in the 1930s. A selection of work by architectural students from the School of Architecture, University College, Dublin is also included. They surveyed more than two hundred thatched houses from five villages around Ireland in the 1940s. The exhibition is complemented with four pastel drawings by the Irish artist Seán Keating (1889-1977). The vibrant drawings illustrate the interior and furniture of the home of Murty Culloty's house, Kiskeam, County Cork. The exhibition continues until 14 October, 2007.

 SCHOOLS COMPETITION - TRAVEL POSTERS

To celebrate National Heritage Week 2007 (25th August - 2nd September), the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life    is inviting upper primary students to create a Travel Poster of your area. The picture can display any elements of your  area. This competition is in conjunction with our new temporary exhibition 'Come Back to Erin' Irish Travel Posters of  the 20th Century. Entry forms, terms and conditions are available from the Education & Outreach Department or by  emailing tdoyle@museum.ie  Entries will be accepted up until Saturday 10th November.

 SEMINAR ON IRISH TRAVEL POSTERS
   Friday 21st September 2007: 9.30am - 3.30pm

To complement the exhibition Come Back to Erin: Irish Travel Posters of the 20th Century  the museum is holding a day-long seminar on travel posters. The day includes an introduction to the exhibition as well as a series of talks on a    history of tourism, landscape art, Irish travel posters and postcards.  Age 14+
Speakers include: Dr. Séamas Mac Philib, Dr. Barbara O'Connor, Linda King and Joe Lee.   Admission is free but  booking is required.

An exciting exhibition entitled Come Back to Erin: Irish Travel Posters of the 20th Century, featuring a selection of travel and tourism posters, is currently on display at the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life.
This exhibition features a selection of strikingly colourful travel and tourism posters from the 20th century. The posters span the decades from 1908 to the 1960s, which was a period when mass tourism began to develop and also represented a period of great growth in the advertising and marketing industry. Some of the poster images by the Irish artist Paul Henry in particular became best sellers even in the 1920s and became essential images of Ireland. The exhibition is running in association with Iarnród Éireann.

To complement this exhibition the museum is holding a day-long seminar on travel posters on Friday 21st September 2007. The day includes an introduction to the exhibition as well as a series of talks on a history of tourism, Irish travel posters and postcards. Biographies of Contributors

   *   Dr. Séamas Mac Philib is Senior Curator in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life. He was a member of the core team which put the museum storyline and exhibition together. He has worked in museums in Stockholm, Paris and in the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum and formerly as an official in the Department of the Taoiseach, where he carried out strategic planning for a National Folk Museum for Ireland.

   *   Barbara O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Communications at Dublin City University. She has an academic background in sociology and social anthropology and her research interests include popular cultural forms and practices such as tourism, dance and media. She has published widely in each of these areas and is co-editor of Tourism In Ireland: A Critical Analysis (Cork University Press, 1993) and, Irish Tourism: Image, Culture and Identity (Channel View Publications, 2003).

   *   Linda King lectures in design history and theory at IADT Dun Laoghaire, specialising in the study of graphic design and printed ephemera. She is currently completing her PhD, Traditions and Modernities: Aer Lingus and the visualisation of Irish identities 1950-1961, a study of Aer Lingus posters and advertising strategies. She has published and lectured widely on this subject and on various aspects of Irish design and material culture.

   *   Joe Lee, visual artist and digital media director/producer, is a graduate of the National College of Art and Design. He has worked with a wide range of individuals and organisations including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Abbey Theatre, Dublin City Council, John Hinde, The Arts Council, The National Museum, Sligo County Council Arts Office, RTÉ and Granada TV. In 1993 Joe directed an arts documentary - Hindesight - that looked at the life and work of photographer and post card manufacturer John Hinde.

Turas na mBan: Women's Journey - A Conference about Women
October 12th and 13th 2007: Knockranny House Hotel, Westport, Co. Mayo.
The conference is being organised by Meitheal Mhaigheo. This year the line up includes Mark Patrick Hederman,  OSB, who will talk about creativity and the feminine, Dr. Edel Breathnach's contribution will reveal aspects of the lives    of women in early  Medieval Ireland, Mary O'Rourke, T.D. will speak about her life as a politician and Dr. Ríonach Uí  Ógáin's talk  will focus on women and the seannós and singing traditions.  Enda Kenny T.D., Ceannaire , Fine Gael,  will officially open the conference on Friday afternoon, October 12th.
