Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill was born in Lancashire, England in 1952 and raised in Corca Dhuibhne, the Irish-speaking area in Co. Kerry. Ní Dhomhnaill was among the literary group Innti when at university and although her poetry has matured with age, a wonderful vitality and energy and hope are still in evidence, as they were in her poetry from this early, inspirational period in recent Irish literary history.

Perhaps the most striking feature of Ní Dhomhnaill's poetry for those who do not speak Irish is her use of folklore sources. A staple is the juxtaposition of modern life with folkloric motifs, each putting the other in context. There is a fine sense of humour in her work too along with a feisty strain of native feminism (the type that might well object to 'feisty' were it not for the sense of humour).

It would be practically impossible to list the many prizes, awards and honours which have been bestowed on Ní Dhomhnaill at home and abroad; she is truly internationally renowned and is among the few Irish-language writers well known to the general Irish public.
Ní Dhomhnaill is in constant demand: she is an animated reader of her poetry and unlike some other poets who write in the Irish language she welcomes translation into English of her work and has worked closely with translators on projects to make versions of her work available in English. She, herself, writes only in the Irish language, however.
