Castlebar boxers miss out at National Youth Championships
While the hopes of Castlebar in repeating last years win in the National Stadium were thwarted when Simon Byrne was defeated, there was a great boost for Mayo boxing when five national titles were won by county boxers.
Byrne, the last of the Castlebar boxers left in with a title hope, was beaten 6/4 in the final tally. Looking good for the first two rounds, he faded in the last and allowed his opponent to score the important points, which enabled him to gain victory and deprive Byrne of a second title.

Five titles captured by Mayo boxers
The club members present in the stadium celebrated however when no fewer than five titles went to other Mayo clubs. This was a tremendous night for boxing in the county. We congratulate Geesala, Ardnaree, Westport and Kilmaine for doing the county proud. While over the years many titles have come to Mayo clubs, this was a historic night for the Kilmaine club and its trainer Ger Keane, when Barry Cull brought home the first national title to the club in its ten-year history.

Castlebar club member Sean Horkan leads Irish team on friendship tour in U S A to Native American Indian Nation
Castlebar club member and National Treasurer Irish Amateur Boxing Association Sean Horkan has returned from America where he led Ireland’s under 21 team on a most successful friendship visit to the New England area to compete in the Sports Warrior Tour competition. . This tour was under the aegis of the Native American Indian Nation, a grouping in the USA Olympic movement. Sean states that, “ a major consideration in the development of this Irish/American friendship was the awareness in the Native American Sports Council, of the American Indian connection from the Irish Famine time, with the West of Ireland, when the Choctaw Indian Tribe gave a large financial contribution to Irish famine relief”.
Other Mayo personnel on the trip were Henry Coyle, Fiona Hennigan and Eamon Horkan.
More details of this tour from Sean Horkan can be found in Mayo Boxing News April 9th at www.castlebar.ie on the Castlebar main page.

Westport Club hosts Irish Team
St Anne’s in Westport has been selected as the training venue for the current Irish senior squad. Peter Mullen and his team deserve great credit in being able to provide such a fine gym for the team.
