Castlebar's New Indoor Market
5, Jun 2009 - 22:53

Traders from all over Mayo and from the counties beyond have been travelling to the recently opened Castlebar Indoor Markets every Saturday to sell their wares, which are not quite like anything you are likely to come across on a conventional shopping boulevard.

From jewellery and jams, alternative clothing and bargain bed linen to hand made greeting cards, Korean and Polish food, antiques and collectible dinky cars and records, shoppers at the indoor market can browse their way through more than 20 stalls and test their market-place haggling until the price is right.

The enterprise came about when Kenneth O'Brien was left with an empty building at the retail park on the Breaffy Road as the economic downturn set in.

The same downturn has prompted a revived interest among consumers in bargain hunting and market shopping, according to Kenneth, so he decided to turn the setback in to an opportunity to put the building to use.

A stall at the Castlebar Indoor Markets costs just €20 every Saturday to trade from 10am-4pm.

Mr. P.J. McDonagh is one of the organisers and a trader at the market. He is organising an official launch of the markets this Saturday, June 6th, when there will be entertainment, fun activities for children, an all day raffle and plenty of other family attractions.

"Traders are travelling more than two and three hours to get here. We have one guy who sells collectible coins and stamps, while another trader is selling collectible records, which he sources throughout Europe and can be very valuable. Other stalls you are likely to come across include home-baking, free range eggs, African food, Books and toys. One thing we stipulate to traders is that they must be offering good value for quality products" he explained.

Castlebar Indoor Markets are also seeking more traders to grow the market to its full capacity of 32 stalls.
