U14 B Hurling Championship

Castlebar Mitchels ‘B’  5-1
Ballyvary    1-2

Castlebar Mitchels had a good win over a strong Ballyvary side in the first round of the championship in Ballyvary. In excellent conditions for hurling, both sides gave  excellent performances  of  skill and determination. Ballyvary started strongly and exerted continuous pressure on the visitors in the first quarter. James Doherty & Eoin Gannon were on top at midfield for Ballyvary and ensured their forwards enjoyed plenty of possession. However determined defending by Mitchels kept them at bay. Castlebar notched a goal by Conor  Mylett in one of their few attacks to take a surprise lead. A pointed free from Niall Barrett closed the gap but despite more pressure from Ballyvary, Mitchels led by 1-0 to 0-1 at the break.

The second half saw Mitchels come more into the game. They gained parity at midfield with good performances from Brian Gallagher & Paul Colleran. A point from Sean King and another Mylett goal opened the gap wider and when a long range free from Paul Colleran finished in the back of the Ballyvary net the position looked better for Castlebar. Conor Mylett then completed his hat trick with a great strike but Eoin Gannon  struck back with a goal to keep the pressure on. A point for the home side, and  a Mitchels goal from Eric Gavin gave the scoreline a somewhat flattering look in the end.

Mitchels were best served by Rory Quinn in goals, Brian Collins, Eoghan Quinn, Daniel Loughran  & David Bell in defence, Paul Colleran & Brian Gallagher at midfield and Kevin Keena, Conor Mylett, Cathal Walsh & Sean King in attack
