Firsts

The Firsts finish their league campaign on Sunday next against Sligo at Hamilton Park Strandhill kicking off at 2pm. However this does not spell the end of the season as the draw for the Cawley cup will be announced shortly. This is a wonderful opportunity to finish the season on a real high and all will be looking forward to it. With a little bit of luck anything is possible.

Preparations are certainly in full swing ahead of the Ard Na Cregg and the Mayo cup so training continues as usual. The League went well for Castlebar Seconds and the following players must be at training:

Connacht U-18 League

Ballyhaunis 7 Castlebar 20

Castlebar U-18’s turned in a gutsy performance to secure both points in this entertaining league match, played in poor conditions on Saturday evening.

As all four tries came from the Castlebar pack, it shows where the strength of this team lies. It was Shane Casey, who weaved through the Ballyhaunis defence for the first touchdown, followed shortly afterwards by Ross Barrett. Some marvellous dynamic running by Damien McLoughlin throughout the game was rewarded with a fine try.

And as the game entered the last quarter, it was Shane Casey once more who was on the end of a passing move, to get the touchdown in the corner.

Overall there were some fine performances by Castlebar players, including Fintan Casey (captain), Daire Mulgrew, Conor Walsh, Ross Barrett, David Casey and Stephen Keane.

The new half back pairing of Stephen Keane and Fintan Casey combined well, and the centre pairing of David Langan and Joe O Neill defended stoutly, along with wingers, Mark Nash and Darragh Loftus and full back Conor Douglas. In the opening minutes of the match, a marvellous tackle by Mark Nash stopped a certain Ballyhaunis try.

Training continues at 7.30 on the pitch on Wednesday, and to repeat, new members are very welcome.
