Firsts

The firsts are at home on Sunday in the quarter final of the Connacht Junior Cup in which their opponents are Corinthians who defeated Loughrea last Sunday. This is vital as a win will see them through to the semi final while defeat will end the season. Support is essentail so everyone, wether they are club members or not are asked to come out on the day and cheer the lads on. Kick off is at 3pm.

Well done to the Castlebar Vets team who defeated Reading on Thursday night 7-5 in a cracking game. The try was scored by Jimmy Staunton while Pat Staunton kicked an amazing conversion. This was an incredible display by a side who had not worn the jersey in a while but showed that team spirit and determination exists and a lot can be done when the team believe in each other and the jersey. Well done everyone.

Well done also to John Parsons who now has the distinction of playing for Castlebar RFC in five decades.

Castlebar’s under 18’s were in action on Wednesday night last against Gort in the Connacht cup. However things did not go their way and Gort came out on top. The good news from this is that they now face Connemara at home in the Plate next Sunday in a game that they know they can win and will be all out for it. Support would be great so all are asked to come out.

Castlebar’s under 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 teams travelled to Ballina at the weekend and had a blitz with the home side. The team left early and was back by 1pm but there was plenty of rugby played in the mean time. It was a very useful morning for the players with games won and lost but the important thing is that from a playing point of view it was an excellent morning and special word of thanks to Ballina for looking after us so well. It would be fair to say that both teams gained from the day.

Next weekend there will be training as usual and the following week is the under 8 and under 9 Connacht blitz. On the same week there will be a final blitz for the under 10’s,11’s and 12 teams.

More information will be given to the players on Saturday and in next week’s papers.
