CASTLEBAR RFC NEWS

Firsts

The firsts got their Connacht Junior Campagain underway in spectacular style on Sunday when they travelled to Corinthians in the opening game of the season. In what turned out to be a rather bad tempered game, Castlebar came out on top winning by 28-7. the tries coming from Darren Claussen, Ger Prendegast, Tadgh Kirby and Mike Campbell. Robbie Cusack and Paul Coady kicked the remaining points. The bonus point gained means that Castlebar are currently second in the table after the opening game of the season. Next Sunday a combined first and seconds team will face Monivea. Details will be announced at training on Thursday evening.

Youths news

Castlebar U-18s played Westport Sunday in Cloondeash.

Westport won the game 14-7. It was a particularly worthwhile game for Castlebar as there were seven of last years under 16's on the pitch!  The Castlebar try came from a wonderful breakout from Mark Staunton who set Martin Gill away who then passed to Nigel Byrne who scored under the posts.

Next match Ballina away on Saturday.

Youths training continues on Wednesday evening with a bus leaving the courthouse at 6.30pm.

Underage news

Castlebar’s Mini rugby for all under 7,8,9 and 10 players began once again on Saturday last with an fantastic start with many new players coming along. By all accounts all coaches were very happy with the turnout and it is hoped that all players will again turnout throughout the season. As always new players and parents are invited to attend. All new players welcome.

The under 11 and under 12 teams were in action on the same day with the National Blitz taking place in Athlone. A great day was had by all with both teams doing incredibly well. Training continues at the usual times and the season has got some very important games coming up so all players will be expected to attend.
