Firsts

The season for the firsts ended on a disappointing note on Sunday when Corinthians defeated the firsts in the quarter final of the cup by 23 points to 18. This was certainly a game that could have been won were it not for some decisions that went against the team but such is rugby and now it is a chance to think about a season which overall went well and was a step up from last season which included qualification for the AIL junior cup.Tries From Enda Murphy, Paddy Flannelly and Darren Claasen, Darren kicked two conversions.

The team was: Alan Gavin, Paddy Durcan, Kevin Cox, Ger Prendegast, Sheamus Devaney, Enda Murphy, Mike Campbell, Tadgh Kirby, Christy Cusack, Robbie Cusack, Jason Keane, Darren Claasen, Paddy Flannelly, Simon O’Malley, Paul Coady.

The Replacements used : Matt Connolly, Paul Heverin, Mike Power.

Dress dinner

The chance to finally get rid of the rugby gear in get into the black suit comes around again as Castlebar RFC are holding their annual dress dinner on Friday the 22nd of April in the Clubhouse. Dress is Black Tie and Tickets are a reasonable cost at 40 euro and are available from committee members. Contact David O’Malley on 087 – 2401811.

Ladies

The season is now over for the ladies and given that this season was for training only, a great turnout has showed that we now have a ladies team ready for anyone. Castlebar Ladies RFC would like to thank everyone for coming out and hope that all will be ready for the new season, which starts early so training will recommence in a few weeks time.

Underage

The under 18 team were due to play Connemara last Sunday in the plate but the game was called off when Connemara failed to field. This means that the under 18 team are now through to the semi final of the competition with a home draw against Monivea next Sunday. Players will be notified during the week and the fixture will be announced on Midwest Radio and CRCfm.

Mini Rugby news

Next Saturday is a very important day for Castlebar RFC when we co-host the Connacht Under 8 and 9 blitz next Saturday in Castlebar with Westport. The day will start at 11am but teams will be arriving from 10.15 so it is important that all members are out there as soon as possible. Teams travelling to Castlebar include, Athlone, Corinthians and Sligo meaning that there will be some good rugby on show where enjoyment and participation is the important aspect of the game. The club are asking parents of players to come out and help and it will be a case of all hands on deck to ensure that the day is enjoyable and successful. All are invited and refreshments will be served. There will be many games on the day and it plans to be a great day of fun rugby for all involved.

This will also be the final week of mini rugby in the club with the exception of the May bank holiday weekend when Coolmine rugby club will have their under 12 and under 13 teams in castlebar for Sunday morning challenge games.

Awards and party night

The mini rugby awards and party night will be announced soon. Presentations of the mini rugby awards will be made for player of the year, most improved player etc with a very well known rugby celebrity making the presentations to the players. More news on this very shortly.
