Firsts

The firsts had a tough encounter to look forward to against Ballinrobe last Sunday and some great rugby meant that we overcame a strong Ballinrobe side to win by 30 points to 13. This win puts Castlebar joint top of the junior league with Sligo and the next few games are now going to be vital with next Sunday one of the most important ones as they travel to Buccaneers who defeated Westport last weekend. A win would certainly go a long way to a great league and support will be vital for this one. The game kicks off at 3pm in Athlone and players will be informed of travel arrangements at training.

Castlebar Squad: Rayno DeKock, Paddy Durcan, Kevin Cox, Rory Hughes, Mike March, Enda Murphy, Ger Prendegast, Mike Campbell, Christy Cusack, Tadgh Kirby, Jason Keane, Darren Claasen, Paddy Flannelly, Simon O’Malley, Paul Coady, Alan Gavin, Alex Goor, Neil Coyle, Mike Power.

Seconds

The seconds league began for Castlebar last Sunday when we were due to face Buccaneers third team but the game was called off. It continues on Sunday when we become the first team to face Carrick On Shannon on their return to junior rugby. The game kicks off at 3pm in Carrick.

Castlebar Squad: Eanna Kilbane, David Bailey, Brendan Kelly, Alan Gavin, Neil Coyle, Ray Blake, Mark Staunton, Paul Heverin, Eamon Cafferty, Padraic Cronin, Ciaran Flynn, Jonathon Moran, Brendan Fox, Danny McAndrew, Ivor Gilmartin, John Derrig, Colm Cafferkey, Tommy Nolan, John Joe Ormsby, James Armstrong, Brian Flannery, Michael Moran.

Ladies

Training continues on Saturday evening at 6pm and the call has gone out to all those interested in playing rugby, getting fit and having fun to come out and be part of the fastest growing game around. Training is at Cloondeash and all are welcome.

Underage

The under 16 team’s next fixture is scheduled for next Sunday away to Oughterard. Training continues every Wednesday night – bus from the Courthouse at 6.30, on the pitch at 7.00.

The under 14 and under 16 teams continue training this evening (Wednesday). All Players must be at the clubhouse at 7pm with a bus leaving the Courthouse at 6.30.

Under 18

It was a very busy weekend for the under 18 team with two games over the weekend. On Friday night under lights we drew with Ballina 15-15 in a great game that set us up for our encounter with Galwegians on Sunday which featured many Connacht youth players. However the city side proved just too strong on the day winning a close game in which the score did not tell the story. The league gets underway this weekend with a trip to Gort on Sunday. Players will be notified about kick off times and travel arrangements at training on Friday night at 7.30.

Mini rugby

Castlebar’s first mini rugby blitz of the season got underway on Saturday when all teams from under 7 to under 12 headed for Connemara for games at all age groups. With the emphasis on enjoying the game all teams got out on the famed monastery field and we had wins and losses. But it augurs well for the rest of the season with some great individual performances and it proves that there are some great players to look out for through the rest of the season. Training continues on Saturday at 11am at the clubhouse.

Congratulations

Congrats to Castlebar Mitchells on winning the County intermediate football championship on Sunday last and commiserations to the B team on losing the junior final.
