Firsts

The Firsts produced on of the best performances of the season on Sunday when they overcame Loughrea in the Cawley cup winning 19-6 on a bitterly cold day. Despite falling behind twice in the game and facing enormous pressure from a tough Loughrea pack, they held on brilliantly with excellent tries from Nigel Byrne, Jason Keane and Darren Claasen who also kicked two conversions. This win was what the club needed and Credit must go to all players and coaching staff. Man of the match was Christy Cusack who had an outstanding game playing simply inspiring rugby. Next up is a tough encounter against Corrib in Headford kicking off at 2.30. If you can travel to the game all support would now be greatly appreciated as we enter an important part of the season.

Castlebar: Paul Coady, Mike Power, Darin Claasen, Mike Campbell, Paddy Flannelly, Jason Keane, Christy Cusack, Rayno DeKock, Paddy Durcan, Ruairi Hughes, Alex Goor, Paul Heverin, Enda Murphy, Mike March, Ger Prendergast.

Seconds

The second’s next outing is on Sunday the 27th away to Westport in an important league game. With 38 players on the squad and training regularly, hopes are high of a good second’s run this year and Ivor’s lads are having a great season so far.

The Under 18 team had two games over the weekend. On Thursday night last they faced Ballinrobe under lights in Cloondeash. Castlebar’s scorers were Tom Murphy with a try and Ronan Conway who scored a try, penalty and conversion. It was an excellent display from all concerned. On Sunday last they faced Ballina who came out on top in a good game 15-12. Castlebar’s tries coming from Padraig Healy and Shane Cunnane with Ronan Conway again with the conversion. The team is progressing very well at the moment and face Loughrea in the league in Cloondeash kicking off at 12 noon. Training continues as usual.

Mini Rugby

Castlebar’s Mini Rugby teams from under 7 to our under 12 team were in action this weekend when they travelled to Monivea for a mini blitz. It was an outstanding day with all teams producing excellent performances and winning big games. Everyone enjoyed what was a great day of rugby and it is looking good for all teams at these age groups. Training continues on Saturday at 11am.
