Firsts

Disappointment was the order of the day on Sunday when despite a brilliant performance and a try worthy of any occasion from Darren Claasen, Castlebar had to give second best to Ballina in the semi final of the Cawley cup. Darren got all our scores and produced a man of the match display. Sadly we could not get a score in the second half that Ballina added to penalties. Next week’s game against Monivea is off due to their involvement in the All Ireland Junior cup so our next game is against OLBC in the cup in two weeks.

Castlebar: Paul Coady, Mike Campbell, Darin Claasen, Jason Keane, Nigel Byrne, Robert Cusack, Christy Cusack, Rayno de Kock, Paddy Durcan, Kevin Cox, Ruairi Hughes, Alex Goor, Enda Murphy, Alan Gavin, Ger Prendergast.

Subs: Brian Flannery, Ciaran Flynn, Paul Heverin, Paddy Flannelly, Mike Power.

Seconds

Castlebar 7 Westport 0

The opening week of the Mayo Junior B league saw Castlebar face Westport under lights on Saturday night last. In a performance that will rank as one of the best all season, Castlebar brilliantly defeated Westport by 7-0. The try coming from Padraig Healy which he Duly Converted. The try came from a brilliant chip by Jonathon "flea" Moran for Healy to chase and he out ran the defence to score. Westport responded in a big way but found the Castlebar defence in unbeatable form and the team showed great heart and determination to produce on of the best team efforts of the year. Certainly a performance which Jimmy Staunton and Ivor Gilmartin must be proud of. It was also an excellent Captain’s performance by Brendan Kelly.

Next week we travel to Ballinrobe to face their second team. Game kicks off in the Racecourse at 2.30.

Castlebar: Brendan Kelly, John Joe Ormsby, Brian Flannery, Damien Glackin, Sean Hynes, Paddy Flannelly, Eamon Cafferkey, David Staunton, Jonathon Moran, Padraig Healy, Mark Staunton, Chris Jordan, John Derrig, Tommy Nolan, James Armstrong, Paul Heverin, David O’Malley, Simon Trezguet, Seamus Devaney, Mike Moran, Chris Rogan, Neil Coyle.

Under 18

Castlebar 12 Galwegians 12

The under 18 team faced Galwegians in a friendly on Sunday last and in what was a tough competitive game drew 12-12 with a side who currently top of the under 18 league division one. Galwegians went ahead with a try after five minutes that they converted. Castlebar had to respond and Danny Cunningham, Ronan Irwin and Tom Murphy produced some exiting breaks at this time. With 25 minutes gone in the half Padraig Healy picked and crossed over for an excellent try, which he converted, to level matters. Galwegians very strong pack forced a lead try before the break that was not converted lead 12-7 at the break.

The second half saw a brilliant performance from Castlebar who rucked and mauled to perfection and this led to a well-deserved break from Ronan Irwin whose 65-yard run was halted just short of the Galwegians line. The resulting ruck led to Healy touching down for his second try of the afternoon. Despite Castlebar being on top throughout the second half, they could not take the lead and a draw was the final outcome.

Castlebar had some great performers in Shane and Fintan Casey, Danny Cunningham, Ronan and Dara Irwin and a man of the match performance from Padraig Healy. The team are well into plans for the trip to Scotland in two weeks time and there may be a game next weekend. Stay tuned to local media for more details.
