Firsts

The Firsts excellent run this season continued on Sunday last when they faced a tough Corrib team in Cloondeash. Paul Coady and Tadgh Kirby were the try scorers as they overcame the rugged and talented opponents to win by two points. It’s now a welcome break for the South Africa match before preparing for the clash with Creggs in two weeks. This win now puts Castlebar in fourth position just six points off the lead and seven clear of OLBC, Corinthians and Corrib in the league.

Mini Rugby/Underage

Castlebar host a mini blitz next Saturday with Westport and Tuam visiting Cloondeash. There are games from under 8 all the way up to under 12. Refreshments will be served and all help from coaches, players and parents would be greatly appreciated. It all gets underway at 11am and all players are asked to be at the pitch at 10.30. All going well, it will be finished by 12 noon with food afterwards. All parents are asked to come out and support on Saturday.

Underage

Under 14

The Under 14 team faced Ballinrobe on a wet Wednesday night and played some excellent rugby to win comfortably in the league. This is an excellent start to the season for the lads and there are some very talented players on this side. Training continues as usual.

Under 16

On the U-16 front, a touring English school, Dauntseys visited Castlebar on bank holiday Monday and faced the under 16 team on what was a rotten day for rugby. However it was the day for the English as Dauntseys triumphed 21-0. However it was the perfect run out for the lads and hopes are high of a good season. It is important that as many players as possible get out to training on Wednesday night.

Under 18

The under 18 team were beaten by a well-drilled Ballinrobe team on Saturday night. Despite their best efforts, the lads had to give second best on the day.

Under 20

The under 20 season goes from strength to strength after defeating Gort 20-17 on Saturday in a tough game. There were some excellent displays from Gavin Sullivan and Chris Rogan and the forwards were excellent. Padraic Healy and Mark Staunton were also outstanding in a fast paced cracking encounter. Gort had some great players and put it up to Castlebar on occasion but Castlebar held their nerve to win by three points with a try in the final minute. Castlebar were the worthy winners but credit must go to their opponents for a tough game.
