Mini Rugby News

Last Saturday, Castlebar’s mini teams faced Ballina and Westport in our first Blitz of the season. Over 300 players in all age groups took to the field with a large number of parents coming out to support their young stars. There were some great games over the morning and some great performances individually so well done to all.

Training continues next Saturday and registration will take place after training.

Under 13

Castlebar U13 went to Westport to play their first fifteen man line up on a full sized pitch.  The game was a development game to introduce the full game to both teams.  There was an excellent turnout for the game and it was played with great spirit. Westport were in very good try scoring form, running in three tries and played a great running game.   Thanks to Joe Corcoran and the U13 team in Westport for a very enjoyable development game.
U13 registration will take place after training on Saturday 13th in Castlebar RFC.

Under 16

Castlebar U-18’s Clinch first victory of the season.

Castlebar’s U- 18’s travelled to Clane, Co Kildare at the weekend for a pre-season tour.   Castlebar made it two from two having beaten Clane in Castlebar earlier in the year.

Castlebar got off to a bright start with an early break by Luke Staunton leading to a very well finished try in the corner by Ronan Byrne.   Castlebar kept up the pressure in an exciting opening 20 minutes with open running rugby.   That pressure was rewarded with a second try by second row Kevin Glynn.   Both tries were converted by Steven Rogan.   Castlebar were hit with three injuries early on with Shane Casey, Cian O’Sullivan and Ronan Byrne all being sidelined in the first half.

As Clane got into the game Castlebar’s defence were put under considerable pressure and hard tackling from Emmet Gill, David Casey, Kevin Glynn and Niall O’Byrne kept them at bay for large parts of the game but they eventually touched down for the first of their tries.   Castlebar responded with a third try from Steven Rogan.   With Castlebar only one converted try ahead with 10 minutes to go Clane upped the pressure but the disciplined and resolute defence ensured that Castlebar came away with a well deserved victory.

Clane RFC hosted a social evening for Castlebar in their clubhouse and all involved in the trip would like to thank them for their hospitality.

Despite trailing 10-7, some outstanding play from Paul Coady forced a mistake from the Westport defence leaving Nigel Byrne in with the chance to score an opportunist try. This puts Castlebar into the district league semi final with Monivea the likely opponents at a date to be confirmed.
