They came in their hundreds and liked what they saw. The overall impression of what was a very successful Thursday night in Castlebar as the Rugby club got Its Rag Rugby competition underway for the first time. Despite the threat of rain that surrounded the teams, the Enthusiasm showed was excellent with all teams present excited with the opportunity of playing the fastest growing aspect of the sport in the world.

Despite the slight delay all teams were ready to go at 7.20 and the Hooter sounded for the first games of the night. All eyes were on pitch one where Killary were preparing their local derby against their second team while on pitch four the Battle of the bars was underway with Bar one facing the Castle Inn where more than pride was at stake. The Castle with a vocal support behind them and not suffering from dehydration, produced some moments of magic to win after a close encounter that referee Paddy Durcan did well to keep under control at times. The win was a shock and suddenly one of the dark horses of the competition came into being. However, don’t write off the Bar one team after just one week of competition. Their second defeat of the night to Damien McLoughlin was seen as a shock. The coming games will be interesting for both sides in that group.

In the other groups, some quality rag rugby was played by all sides with several draws the order of the day. A good sign as to the standards of the teams. Baxter and the Lost playing out one such encounter with the other draw being the clash of the Undertakers and the Mingin Wingers. Four teams who could have a bearing on the tournament.

Due to changes that couldn’t be avoided, some teams have been moved as regards their pool. However their scores from the first game has not been changed which is good news for the Castle Inn who are unbeaten from last week. The amended pools are below.
