Abbotstown Results 2003

A number of swimmers from the Castlebar Swimming Club attended the Abbottstown Inaugural SC Meet on 24th/25th May. This was the first competition to be held at Abbottstown. The new 50m Olympic, 8 lane pool for competitive swimmers is complemented by a 5 lane diving pool and a very large spectator area.

Cian Holland once again showed his strength by reaching the ‘A’ Finals in the 50m Freestyle in a time of 24.81 which earned him 2nd place and 8 events later took another silver in 50m Butterfly in a time of 26.48.

Laura English also in sparkling form reached ‘A ‘Finals in 200m Breaststroke and was placed 5th and followed this up with another fine performance in the 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1.19.04

The ‘B’ Finals got off to a thrilling start with swimmers having a very high strike rate of personal best times and Colm Garrick touching second in 50m Backstroke in a time of 29.35 and third in 50M Breaststroke in time of 32.53. Colm also reached finals in the 100m Breaststroke, 100m Backstroke and 100m IM
Jimmy Wiseman went to Abbottstown not just to perform but to achieve as he reached the B Final in 200m Breaststroke and went on to swim it in a personal best time of 2.48.89, He swam the 100 IM in a time of 1.07.35 and the 100m Breaststroke in a time of 1.16.45.
Jill Magee swam well achieving a place in the B Final of 100m Breaststroke in a personal best time of 1.21 81. Jill’s other swims included 200m Breaststroke and 100m Freestyle.
Darragh Quinn left his mark in 100m Breaststroke and reached the B Final, Darragh also swam the 100m IM and 100M Butterfly.

Sarah Caulfield was in blistering form as she swam the 200m Breaststroke in a personal best time of 2.58.82.

To mark the inaugural meet some of Team Ireland’s top swimmers participated including Terenure College Star Stephen Manley, Commonwealth Games finalists Andrew Bree, Emma Robinson
and Julie Douglas.

Overall the meet was a very successful maiden voyage for the Castlebar swimmers who deserve much praise for the high standards they have achieved at national level.
Good luck Cian at the Scottish LC Nationals in Glasgow on 20-22 June – we will all be gunning for you.


B & C Gala

Castlebar swimmers again had excellent performances at the Graded Gala which was held in the Castlebar swimming pool and hosted by the Westport Swimming Club on Saturday 24th May.

Swimmers from 6 clubs participated and once again competition was keen.
‘A’ Cert was awarded to Rory Tuohy in 100m Backstroke where he knocked 6 seconds off his best time.
