It was a great weekend all round for many of the Castlebar National School swimmers as they took part in the Irish Schools Minor Championships in Donaghmede, Dublin on 14th/15th November.

The top medal winner from the Castlebar club was Sally Cunniffe, St Angela’s as she charged ahead showing tremendous ability to take Gold in U10 Breaststroke and Bronze in Freestyle. This was a fantastic achievement for Sally.

James Sweeney, Scoil Raifteiri, showed class and style and was in brilliant form. He reached finals in both the Breaststroke and Freestyle and achieved 3rd and 5th place respectively.

Killian Dervan swimming for Breaffy N.S. was not overawed by his first appearance at the Irish Schools Championship, he swam a great heat race to reach the final in U9 Breaststroke where he took second place and bagged a silver medal.

Annie McCormack, St. Paul’s, Islandeady did the club proud again as she reached the final in Backstroke and got a certificate for 5th place and was pipped by a split second out of the final in Freestyle.

Nicholas Quinn, Scoil Raifteiri had an impressive heat swim in the U11 Butterfly reached the final and came 5th in a time of 39.07. Nicholas also swam the Backstroke but did not manage to make a personal best time on this occasion .

All these young swimmers represented their schools at the highest level in the country and deserve much credit for their excellent performances.
