The Connaught Secondary Schools Championships were held in Claremorris on Sunday 12th January and swimmers from the Castlebar Swimming club were in fine form. St Geralds Castlebar scooped two golds with the Senior Boys Medley Team relay of Colm Garrick, Darragh Quinn, Cian Holland and Ciaran Garrick and followed this up with another gold for the Freestyle team relay of Cian Holland, Colm Garrick, Ciaran Garrick and Michael Walls.

In the Junior section Laura Keaveney (Sacred Heart Westport) took gold in Butterfly and Bronze in Freestyle and Sarah Caulfield (St Patricks Islandeady) took bronze in Breast Stroke.

In the Intermediate section Darragh Quinn (St Geralds, Castlebar) took gold in the 200-m Individual Medley and silver in Breast Stroke. Sarah Wiseman (St Josephs Castlebar) took bronze in Butterfly and Anthony English (St Geralds, Castlebar) bronze in the 200-m individual Medley.

In the Senior Section Cian Holland (St Geralds, Castlebar) took gold in Butterfly and silver in 200 m Individual Medley, Colm Garrick (St Geralds, Castlebar) took bronze in Back Stroke, Dara Dever (Rice College, Westport ) Bronze in Breast Stroke, Ciaran Garrick (St Geralds, Castlebar) bronze in Freestyle and Laura English (St Josephs Castlebar) took silver in Breast Stroke and 200 m Individual Medley.

In the Open 400 M Freestyle event Cian Holland came 1st, Darragh Quinn took 2nd place in the Boys event whilst Laura English (St Josephs Castlebar) came 2nd with Laura Keaveney (Sacred Heart Westport) in 3rd place in girls Open 400M Freestyle event.

The Senior Girls Medley Team relay of Laura English, Jill McGee, Avril Egan, Sarah Wiseman representing St Josephs Secondary School, Castlebar took silver and went on to take a second silver in the Freestyle relay.

The Intermediate Boys Freestyle relay team of Patrick Wiseman, Fergus Sweeney, Darragh Quinn and Anthony English representing St Geralds Castlebar took bronze.

Other swimmers to reach finals included Michael Walls, Jimmy Wiseman of St Geralds Castlebar; Brian Moran (Gortnor Abbey) and Jill McGee St Josephs Castlebar. Ciara McGowan, Avril Egan and Jill McGee of St Josephs Castlebar and also Anthony English and Colm Garrick both of St Geralds, Castlebar all were reserve finalists in their respective strokes.

Also representing St Josephs secondary school was Katie Tuohy, Meabh Garrick, Aisling Walls and Catherine Long. Swimmers representing Sacred Heart Secondary School, Westport included Elaine Joyce and Doireann Dever. Representing Tourmakeady Secondary School was Brian McDonagh.

The following 14 swimmers have achieved the necessary qualifying times go forward to the All Ireland Senior Secondary Schools Championships to be held in Belfast on 7th and 8th February
