American Independence Day in Mayo

All the Mayo born soldiers who served and died with the American Forces during World War 1 and World War 2 as well as in the Korea and Vietnam Wars, will be remembered the Mayo Peace Park, Garden of Remembrance, in Castlebar on next Saturday the 4th of July.

The central highlight of the ceremony, which starts at 6pm, is the unveiling of a special memorial in memory of Corporal Joseph A. Clancy, a native of Westport who died in an air crash during the Vietnam War. Cpl Clancy immigrated to America as a young man; he lived in Cook, county Illinois. A large party of relatives and family friend's are to traveling over from the United States to attend the ceremony and they will meet with all their relatives and friends from the Westport area.

The newly revamped American Memorial in the Mayo Peace Park will also be unveiled on the day.

The very popular Achill singer James Kilbane and the talented Swinford Soprano Francie McNicholas accompanied by musician Antoinette Byrne will add much to the overall ceremony.

The ever popular Castlebar Town Band will provide lively music throughout the ceremony All of this will be topped off with fantastic renditions from the wonderful piper, Mr Pat Conlon.

This is an outdoor event and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy an evening of remembrance, music and song, we would welcome any American's living in the area, who might want to celebrate American Independence Day to come along.

A special American style barbecue, will take place after the event in Cox's Bar and Courtyard, with an array of fantastic entertainment laid on to round off what should be a truly memorable occasion. A small cover charge will apply for the barbecue meal.
