Castlebar's GOAL Mile
By Noel Byrne
18, Dec 2009 - 20:58

The first GOAL mile, which was the brainchild of former GOAL chairperson and international athlete, Noel Carroll, took place in the Phoenix Park, Dublin in 1982.  The following year it transferred to Belfield and has been there ever since, becoming an integral part of Christmas for the many families who take up the baton to help those less fortunate than themselves. GOAL Miles were held at 72 locations throughout the country last year, generating over €370,000 for the poorest of the poor. GOAL is asking people of Castlebar to raise funds for GOAL this Christmas by supporting the annual GOAL Mile. This year the GOAL mile will take place at the St Mary’s running track on Sunday December 27 at 12 midday. The event is reverting to the track for safety reasons because of the ongoing works at Lough Lannagh. All are welcome to run, walk, crawl or even dance the mile event. It is hoped that local sports clubs will be taking part in their colours. All proceeds go to the charity GOAL. Sponsorship cards can be had from Michael Brophy at 087 2496688
