Conference on Poverty and Inequality in Mayo

Mayo Community Platform, a network of community development organisations across Mayo, is holding a conference called Poverty and Inequality in Mayo - Working for Change on Tuesday 19th October in the Welcome Inn, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. The conference is being organised as part of a series of national initiatives to mark UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17th October and 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and the full programme for is available on www.activelink.ie.

Speakers at the conference include Anastasia Crickley of NUI Maynooth, Therése Ruane of Mayo Community Platform and Pat Bennett of the Family Support Agency as well as other experts who will lead interactive workshops on community development, the legal system, collective action and campaigning.

Mayo Community Platform is thankful to the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht affairs for their support. Mary Jackson of Tacú Family Resource Centre and the Mayo Community Platform said:

"This conference will provide a much needed space to examine the responsibilities of individuals and organisations in addressing poverty and inequality, which are problems that did not disappear during Ireland's economic boom and are now on the increase again."

At the conference there will also be an opportunity for participants to find out about Claiming our Future, which is a progressive movement for an equal, sustainable and thriving Ireland. There will be further information on this exciting and innovative movement on the day of the Poverty and Inequality in Mayo - Working for Change conference on 19th October in Castlebar.
