Mayo Intercultural Action
Aid to Palestine
21, Jan 2009 - 22:03

A Candlelight Vigil, organized by Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA), was held in the Market Square last Friday night in solidarity with the Palestinian People as the attacks on Gaza continued.

Those who attended expressed intense concern and outrage at the constant bombardment of ordinary civilians and frustration at the silence and inaction of the international community. Thankfully there is now a tentative ceasefire and humanitarian relief is finally being allowed into the devastated area.

As a result of the vigil and the interest expressed by many people, MIA is joining with the Palestinian Children's Charity to send some much needed aid to the people of Palestine. It is hoped to fill a container with medical supplies and other necessities such as baby food and equipment, cleaning supplies, non-perishable food and kitchen and household supplies. The collection point for items for the container is the Castle St Car-park in Castlebar on Friday 30th January from 2pm to 5pm.

Therese Ruane of MIA encourages people to support this initiative: "Families in Gaza have been left with nothing.  There is an urgent need for all types of supplies as homes and towns have been completely devastated. Medical supplies are needed in particular but all contributions are welcome".

Your support is needed and will be greatly appreciated.
