A Celtic Quilting Project has just been completed by a group of dedicated women in Ballyhaunis direct provision centre under the guidance of artist Carmel Balfe and Natalya Pestova from Mayo Intercultural Action. The quilts have been made in the format of applique and the designs were chosen by the women from images of Irish and Celtic mythology.

Women living and raising children under the institutional arrangements of the direct provision system are keen to learn about Ireland and to take part in life of the county Mayo where they found peace and new home. The project has supported this important call and is bringing the outcome of their dedicated work to the public domain.

The quilts will be exhibited in Ballyhaunis Library from the 4th December for two weeks. The project was funded by Creative Ireland through the Mayo Creative Ireland Small Grant Scheme and facilitated by the Diversity Mayo project of South West Mayo Development Company co-financed by the European Commission under the Asylum Migration and Integration Fund 2014-2010 and is supported by the Department of Justice and Equality.
