The World Refugee Day Awards took place  at the Dublin Civic Offices, Wood Quay on Thursday 19th June 2008 last.

The World Refugee Day Awards is a way of reflecting the positive interaction between people across Ireland. Much of the great work undertaken by asylum seekers/refugees and the local communities at a local level rarely make the headlines, but merit recognition. We invite you to join this initiative to help mark this day.

Prizes were awarded in different categories including Community and Environment, Health and Welfare, Education and Youth, Art and Culture, Sports and Leisure.

Therese Ruane, co ordinator of Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) took the award for education and youth.  This award was awarded to Therese for her commitment to improving the situation for refugees and asylum seekers and in particular:  founding Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) as a support organisation for refugees; providing information; organising leadership and training programmes with Asylum seekers and refugees; organising and initiating events, programs to raise awareness and dispel myths about asylum seekers and refugees.  Over all, the contribution made by Therese and Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) is making a real difference in peoples lives and promoting their participation and integration into the local community.

Therese said:  I’m delighted to receive this award.  It really is an honour and is a recognition of the positive contribution that Mayo Intercultural Action is making to the lives of refugees here in Mayo.

Asylum seekers and refugees have left behind very difficult circumstances and situations in their home countries.  Many are fleeing persecution, war, rape, violence and have come here for shelter and protection.  It isn’t an easy existence for them and they need our support and to be welcomed into our communities.

Winning this award gives me personally and us in MIA, the strength and courage to continue the work that we are doing. It is a very welcome acknowledgement of our work”
