Suicide Prevention Code of Practice

Family Resource Centres in the West Launch Their Suicide Prevention Code of Practice.

13 Family Resource Centres (FRCs) from Mayo and Galway joined the global community in observing World Suicide Prevention week by launching their Suicide Prevention Code of Practice on Friday September 14th in Tacú FRC Ballinrobe. Bill O'Dea, CEO of the Family Support Agency launched the Code and John Fitzmaurice of Jigsaw in Galway gave a key note address stressing the need for community in promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing thus preventing Suicide in communities.

This Code of Practice outlines clear guidelines and best practice for FRCs on how to address suicide prevention in their work. It was developed in conjunction with the HSE (Galway, Mayo & Roscommon) Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention.

Following on from the code of practice launch there were plans to continue with additional training. Unfortunately this plan will have to be deferred until 2013 due to the National HSE directive to defer all training and education programmes with immediate effect until 2013. However If the HSE were open to exploring cost neutral training options then it would be possible to continue with some of the training.
