Cycling Club had a busy weekend with the Youth Connacht Cycling
Championships on Saturday & the Connacht Senior Road Race
Championships on Sunday.
The Connacht Youth Championships for
under 14’s & under 16’s were held in Kiltimagh on Saturday. In the
under 14 race Castlebar were represented by David Brody, Cale Coen,
Liam Corcoran, Tommy Corcoran, Fintan Murphy, Paul Murray & Darragh
Scriney. In the under 16 race the club was represented by Jack
McCormack, Patrick Morley, Lauren Gourlay, Jason Ormsby & Conor
Downes.
The race used the Kiltimagh, Swinford, Bohola, Back
to Kiltimagh circuit, fourteen miles, one lap for the under 14’s &
two laps for the under 16’s. All clubs from Connacht were represented
and it is the first time in a long number of years that Castlebar has
had such large numbers attending provincial championships.
Best
for Castlebar for the under 14’s were Liam Corcoran 2nd, Paul Murray
5th & Fintan Murphy 6th, In the under 16’s Patrick Morley was 5th
with Lauren Gourlay 7th.
The senior championships took place in
Sligo on Sunday & the club was represented by Billy Bourke, David
Brennan, Ciaran Clarke, Paul Dunne, Peter Tuohy, TJ Coen & Tom O
Dowd.
The race was around the Coolaney, Co Sligo circuit,
56 miles with various categories within the race being contested. A
field of 35 started the race, racing the senior one senior two, senior
three, vets and junior competitions. Ciaran Clarke won the gold medal
in the senior three competition whilst Billy Bourke won the gold medal
in the vet’s competition. Castlebar were successful in the team prize
category with Billy Bourke David Brennan & Ciaran Clarke capturing
the gold medal.
The first round of the Connacht road race
league takes place in Castlebar on Tuesday the 23rd of June with sign
on at An Sportlann at 6.30pm race to start at 7.30pm.
This race
will proceed from Castlebar to Claremorris, turning left in Claremorris
to Kiltimagh, turning right out of Kiltimagh to Swinford & turning
left from Swinford back to Castlebar finishing at Abbey Breaffy. The
distance is 40 miles and the finish should be at approx. 9.20pm.
On Thursday next the Connacht under 14 & under 16 time trial Championships take place in Bohola with sign on at 7pm.
On
Friday the Tour de Turlough takes place in Ballina with sign on at
6.30pm in the leisure centre & on Saturday the Connacht youth
League takes place in Ballinrobe race course for under 12’s & under
14’s at 10am.
The second round of the Connacht road race
league takes place on Tuesday the 30th June with sign on at An
Sportlann at 6.30pm.

that there are special training spins arranged by Castlebar Cycling
Club to introduce young people to cycling & also these spins are
suitable if you just want to go for a leisurely cycle in the evening
