As part of GMIT's 1916-2016 Centenary Programme of Events, the History and Geography Programme, GMIT Mayo Campus presents ‘Remembering 1916: A Terrible Beauty is born'. This night of culture, music and poetry, will feature the poetry of W.B. Yeats, James Stephens and Francis Ledwidge, read by Dr Sean Lysaght (poet and writer) and the music of Seán Ó Riada, played by Diarmaid Moynihan (musician and composer). The event will take place from Tuesday 8 March, at 7pm in the Michael Davit Room, GMIT Mayo Campus.

"This event is the first in a series of commemorative events designed as part of the Institute's 1916 commemorations," noted History and Geography Programme Chair, Ms Fiona White. "The Campus also has plans for a public exhibition, curated by staff and researched by students, and for a public lecture, both of which will take place in April," Ms White continued. In addition, commemorative tree planting will be carried out in association with GMIT Mayo Green Campus at 1pm each day from 8th-11th March.

GMIT Mayo Head of Campus Dr Deirdre Garvey noted "these events are a timely reminder of the history of the Easter Rising and of the importance of studying history. They also link well with our newly validated BA (Hons) in History and Geography which is now open for applications on the CAO, code number GA887".
