Be safe Be seen

Runners and walkers and enthusiasts are being urged to take part in an event to help make this road safety event a big one.

We all use roads to get around and most of us use them in different ways: often a mix of walking, catching the bus or driving, and maybe cycling, running or skating too. Of course, however we use roads, we are all people underneath just trying to get about, but some road users are especially vulnerable and need protecting by those of us in charge of vehicles.

A novel campaign has been launched in Co. Mayo , a running series that promotes road safety, Be safe Be seen is the message, the series was recently launched by the famous newscaster Teresa Mannion RTE.

The first of the events will take place on Saturday 20 Feb 2016 in Tourmakeady in Co.Mayo at 12 noon, all taking part will be given Hi viz materials to get the message out there.

Noel Gibbons Road safety officer "If you run or cycle on roads, you're probably all too aware of the risks you face, and the difference it makes if drivers slow down and look out for people on foot and bike. We are using this event to get road safety awareness out there, and our focus this year is about everyone looking out for each other on roads. We'll be especially appealing to drivers to slow down in communities, and take bends and junctions slowly and carefully - to protect the people around them. Runners and cyclists can play a key role in getting this vital message out by making themselves seen to other road users.

The second event is a 10K run in Clonbur, and takes place on 28th February at 12 noon

The third event is Carnacon. Takes place on the 5th March at 12 noon

The fourth event is Claremorris 10K run, which takes place on April 2nd at 12 noon

The Ballinrobe event is an 10K, which takes place on 16th April at 7pm.
