Councils in Mayo, Galway and Sligo are working together to tackle the main causes of collisions. The message of this year's campaign is simple - "Get Home Safely". The campaign is part of the County Councils commitment to the community in which they operate and aims to ensure that road safety issues continue to have a high profile in the country.

This year Mayo, Galway and Sligo County Councils have has produced a dramatic clip posted on you tube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJIGP9pPd14 ) and face book ( http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001192122153 ) which they hope will remind people of what can happen when you speed and commute without care and attention.

Former Rose of Tralee /TV presenter Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabháin said "I am delighted to support the Get Home Safely campaign. With so many people on the road over the Christmas holidays, it's important that we all take our time & get to our destination safely."

Noel Gibbons Road Safety Officer said "Safety is the most important thing we do every day when we commute. We want to be able to take this message out into the community and remind people that there are consequences when you don't drive carefully and safely on our country's roads and more so in these demanding weather conditions."

"Christmas is a time of high traffic incidents and we believe it is a good time to remind people of the responsibilities you have when you sit behind the wheel of a car, not only to yourself but for other road users too."

Inspector Martin Byrne, based at Castlebar Garda headquarters said "I support this campaign because I recognise the devastating effect that road deaths have on the families involved and on the wider community. It's a problem that can, and must, be tackled through individuals making a commitment to slowing down in the community.
