An innovation programme for Mayo, the Higher Certificate in Business in Enterprise Development, has been launched by Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) and the Innovation in Business Centre at GMIT Castlebar.

The two year programme, due to commence in September, is delivered on a part-time basis at the GMIT Castlebar campus. It blends practical learning, hands-on experience and one-to-one mentoring by established entrepreneurs.

The programme will appeal to mature applicants including owners and managers of small business, those with a business idea, members of the farming community and people working full-time or part-time in existing enterprise. Applications are also welcome from ethnic minority groups and citizens from new EU member states.

The programme has been developed by Líonra, the higher education network for the Border, Midlands and Western (BMW) region.

Dr Barbara Burns, Head of GMIT Castlebar, says “The programme provides education and mentoring for individuals to develop ideas for new enterprises. Some ideas may involved advanced technologies while others may involve innovative services.”

Minimum entry for the programme is a pass in five Leaving Certificate subjects: two subjects must be Maths and a language – English or Irish, or an equivalent qualification. Mature students age 23 on or before the 1st Jan 2008 will be considered on the basis of their CV and a short outline of their business idea.

On successful completion, students interested in furthering their education may progress onto a suitable degree programme at the Castlebar campus.

An Information Evening about the Higher Certificate in Business in Enterprise Development programme will take place at GMIT Castlebar on Monday 8th September from 7pm. For further information, email gmitcastlebarinfo@gmit.ieor iibccastlebar@gmit.ie
