A 'Sweet' Reminder on Road Safety
By Noel Gibbons
24, Nov 2008 - 08:22

A ‘sweet’ campaign will be launched by a west of Ireland road safety officer in an attempt to remind drivers of their road responsibilities this Christmas on Monday 24th November 2008.

Mayo County Council have teamed up with An Garda Siochana to support the Life’s Sweet, Drive Sober campaign. Sweets will be handed out by volunteers at various Garda check points throughout the county, bearing the Drive Sober message on the Sweets with road safety leaflets.

The promotion is aimed at addressing the usual increase in drink driving incidents reported around December and Mayo road safety officer Noel Gibbons hopes it will act as a reminder to avoid alcohol completely before driving.

“We want to get the message out that there is no safe limit of drink while driving. No-one should ever take the risk,” said Mr Gibbons.

The Drive Sober message will also be on posters displayed in local bars and car parks around the county. The posters will encourage groups enjoying the festive season to nominate a sober driver for the evening, or to take public transport or taxi.
