"There is an urgent need for women to learn more about the risks to their health from diabetes", says local Heart & Stroke Charity, Croí.  Young women who are planning a pregnancy and who currently have diabetes need to take special steps to protect their health and that of their baby.  Equally as many as 12% of pregnant women develop Gestational Diabetes (diabetes which occurs during pregnancy), which if not managed, can have adverse effects on the health of both the mother and the baby.

To learn more about women's health, pregnancy and diabetes, Mayo women aged between 18 and 42 years of age, with existing Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes or who have, or have had Gestational Diabetes in the past; and are planning a pregnancy, are invited to a FREE Information and Education Evening in the The Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar on Wednesday, April 17th from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Diabetes Specialist and Consultant Endocrinologist, Prof Fidelma Dunne will speak from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on ‘What you need to know if you are preparing for pregnancy' and from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on ‘What to expect during pregnancy if you have diabetes and how to mind your health after pregnancy'.

Admission is free, but places are limited so book your place now by calling Alma on 091-893506 or emailing: alma@croi.ie.
