Fr Máirtín was born in 1919 in Castlebar, Mayo and was a proud Mayo man, he was a very keen and accomplished sports man in his youth and played Gaelic football for Castlebar Mitchell's and County Mayo.

He moved to O' Connell St school in Dublin as a 14-year-old and then to Maynooth Seminary where he was ordained on the 17th June 1941.

He taught Latin in St Jarleth's Tuam from 1945 -1956, following his teaching career, he became the curate in Kilmaine , Co Mayo from 1956 -1962, he then volunteered as the pastor to a parish in Huddersfield, England to serve the Irish community living there from Connemara. It was in Huddersfield that Fr Máirtín learned Irish as it was the only language of many of his parishioners. He became fluent and it remained as his first language.

Fr Máirtín eventually settled down in Carraroe, Co Galway as curate and then parish priest from 1969 to his retirement in 1994. He happily retired in a little cottage in An Sruthán, Carraroe until ill health took hold and was cared for by the kind and caring staff in Teaglach Uilinn in Maigh Cuilinn.
