Local heart charity, Croí, in collaboration with HSE West's Mayo PCCC are hosting a FREE public talk entitled ‘Eating the Mediterranean Way for a Healthy Heart' on Thursday 12th of May at 8pm in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar as part of their ‘Heart Smart' Mayo Programme.

On the night, the ‘Croí MyAction' dietitian, Claire Kerins, will be highlighting the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, which has been proven to reduce one's risk for heart disease and stroke.  There will be up-to-date nutritional advice on the different components of this diet which is known to reduce weight, lower cholesterol and improve overall health. The talk aims to provide you with some tips for adapting this diet into your daily eating habits. The Mediterranean diet is suitable for all ages, especially those who have risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

The ‘Heart Smart' Mayo Programme aims to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke in Mayo and recently launched a report on the findings of a year long community based cardiac risk factor screening programme in Co. Mayo. Over 1,500 people availed of ‘free-of-charge' cardiac risk assessments, which found that almost half (49%) the participants had raised cholesterol (above the recommended levels) and 40% had raised blood pressure. Announcing details of this initiative, Croi ‘Heart Smart' Mayo Co-ordinator, Ailish Houlihan said "The aim of this talk is to raise levels of awareness on how one's risk factors for heart disease and stroke can be managed through dietary changes."
