Belcarra's newly refurbished water scheme was officially launched in May 2007. This project commenced in 2004 and despite some major obstacles, the chairperson of Belcarra Community Co Op Ltd, Colette Heaney, was delighted to announce its completion. The project involved the laying of over 52 kilometers of pipework and a new reservoir and three pumping stations been built. The chairperson pointed out that this was a massive undertaking for any voluntary group and was only made possible by all the support and co operation that they received from the Group Water Scheme section of Mayo County Council. She pointed out that they were indebted to them for their unfailing support.
The chairperson complimented Gerry Munnelly, Gerry Costello, Bernadette Burke, Mark O'Donnell, Frank Forde and the girls in the office on the efficiency and professionalism of their office. Belcarra group water scheme are looking forward to continuing this partnership with Mayo County Council in the future.
The chairperson also thanked Bluehills Consultancy and Declan Biggins, contractor for ensuring that the job was carried out to such a high standard. A special thank you was extended to the area collectors who worked on a voluntary basis for the past 30 years without whose support the refurbishment of the scheme would not be possible. The chairperson also thanked the other members of the committee, Mary B Prendergast and Anne Earley for all their hard work.
