On September 29th a relay of Mayo celebrities, sports persons, politicians and the general public will take part in the first ever pedal go-kart pedalathon to be held in the West of Ireland. The event involves a sponsored go-kart pedal between Swinford and Castlebar in aid of Western Care Association services throughout County Mayo. The event was launched at Horkans Lifestyle & Garden Centre, Turlough, Castlebar by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D., on Saturday, August 4th.

The event itself will take place on Saturday September 29th beginning at the Connacht Gold/Tesco car park in Swinford at 11am and will go via Bohola (12.30pm), Ballyvary (1.30pm) and Turlough (2.00pm) to arrive in Market Squart, Castlebar about 2.45pm. People are being asked to pedal a kilometre for Western Care Association. Amongst those who have already agreed to take part are John O'Mahony TD, Dara Calleary TD, County Manager Peter Hynes, Frank Forde, Eunice Moran, David Cawley and Billy Fitzpatrick form MWR FM. An Taoiseach, has also promised to take part on the day. If his schedule permits. Participants will pedal a set part of the route on a number of BERG pedal go-karts, sponsored by local BERG retailer, Mayo Go-Karts, Turlough, Castlebar. Lines costing €5 each will be sold in the lead-up to the eventand on the day itself for a raffle for the top two pedal go-karte used in the event, a BERG X-plorer XT3 valued at €819 and a BERG Extra AF Sport BF-3 valued at €709. The draw for these vehicles will take place at presentation function in Turlough shortly after the event.

Western Care is a voluntary organisation set up forty six years ago by a group of parents and friends of children with a learning disability. The Association provides a wide range of services to more than 1,000 children and adults through a network of group homes, training centres, and special schools and classes in the community throughout County Mayo.
