National Trails Day


Ireland’s first National Trails Day will take place on Sunday 28th September 2008. This is the first ever National Trails Day to be organised and every one is being encouraged to get out there, get active and enjoy. The event will highlight the various trails now available & accessible throughout the county. To mark this occasion a number of scheduled walks have been organised, details are listed hereunder. Also as part of the event, walking will be brought to a new level as a Nordic Walking Demonstration will also take place.

Description of event

Starting at the Derrada Community Centre, The trail will take you north along a narrow lane and around a maze of small lakes until you reach Furnace Lough, home to one of the biggest marine research stations in Europe.

How to get there

Start from the town of Newport. Follow the N59 in the direction of Mulranney for approximately 5km to reach a road junction on your right (signposted Derrada Community Centre). Turn right and follow this road for approximately 500 meters until you arrive at the Community Centre.

Lean an R314 i dtreo Béal an Mhuirthead ar feadh thart ar 2km go dtí go sroicheann tú acomhal bóithre ar thaobh do láimhe deise (le cuaille eolais do Ros Dumhach). Cas ar dheis agus coinnigh ort ar feadh thart ar 12km, díreach ar aghaidh chomh fada le Sráidbhaile Cheathrú Thaidhg. Tá tús na conaire in aice leis an siopa ar thaobh do láimhe deise agus tú ag teacht ar an sráidbhaile.

How to get there

Start from the village of Glenamoy on the R314 between Belmullet and Ballycastle. Follow the R314 in the direction of Belmullet for approximately 2km to reach a road junction on your right (signposted Ross Port). Turn right and follow this road for approximately 12km (continuing straight at the turn-off for Ross Port) to reach the village of Carrowteigue (An Ceathru Tadhg). The trailhead is located beside the shop on your right as you enter the village.
