450 council staff serve strike notice

The May News reports on the threat of a major strike by outdoor staff of Mayo County Council. Strike notice has been served and work stops next Thursday 15th May if nothing is done to avert the crisis. Principal among the services affected will be bin collections. Negotiations have broken down after two years aimed at trying to implement certain aspects of the Better Local Government Act. Michael Ring has backed the strikers saying "The boys and girls in Council management have done well out of Better Local Government and I think it’s high time the guys at the coal-face got some reward."

300 Mayo motorists caught in penalty points crackdown

According to the Mayo News nearly 300 Mayo drivers have received penalty points for speeding in the past siz months since the new system was introduced. Most of them 291 paid up and received two points and six went to court and received four points. Mayo was ahead of Roscommon with 236 drivers, Sligo with 209 and Leitrim with 87. In Galway 554 motorists received penalty points on their licences. Deaths countrywide are down by one third because of the new points system. For example deaths for the first four months of the year dropped from 134 last year to 98 this year – in simplistic terms that’s 36 people alive today simply due to this measure.
