West Mayo Jnr A Championship

Islandeady 0-10: Castlebar Mitchels 1-8

Castlebar Mitchels overcame the stern challenge of Islandeady by a single point in the West Mayo Jnr Championship at Islandeady on Sat last. Mitchels were quick off the mark with an Eamonn Shaughnessy point in the opening minute. Islandeady then took over the scoring, with five points interrupted only by a Ger Noone point in the 8 min. Good work by Noel Kearney, David Gordon and John McSharry kept the Islandeady score down. Wayward shooting was the hallmark of both teams during this period. Mark Moore marshalled his defence well and Declan Lavelle and Coleman Keane responded to his urgings. With half time looming and a deficit of three points facing them, Declan Reilly caught a ball on the 40 and the Islandeady defence miraculously opened in front of him. He took advantage and crashed a great goal to level the score at half time 1-2 to 0-5.

Mitchels dominated the opening 10 mins of the second half scoring three unanswered points from Fintan McHale and Declan Reilly (2). Indeed it was Reilly who could do no wrong, apart from the odd wide, as the ball bounced well for him. He continuously attacked the defence, opening many gaps and with greater accuracy from the forwards the game should have been out of reach. Wally Flynn was powering forward whilst at centre field Eamonn Shaughnessy and David Quinn were dominating. Fintan McHale, Ian Walsh and Neil Lydon were seeing more of the ball and making better use of it. Ger Noone at full forward was proving a suitable target for the playmakers. Islandeady however played themselves back into the game and closed the gap to the minimum. McHale (2) and Noone kept the Mitchels nose in front as Islandeady once again came in search of a winner and finished the stronger with the last two scores of the game. Mitchels however held out for a relieved win. An improved performance, at times bordering on the good but still room for improvement.

Castlebar 4-13: Breaffy 1-6

With the aid of a strong wind Castlebar led at half time by 1-11 to 1-2. Both teams worked extremely hard and a number of fine moves resulted in some well-worked scores from Michael Cuddy and Shane Hopkins for Castlebar.

The pattern of play did not significantly change in the second half when Gerard O Boyle added a further two goals for the Mitchels. Shane Cunnane in goal made two wonderful saves and generally this was a very well earned victory for the home side.
