Pictured is Imperial Hotel, Castlebar where Michael Davitt founded the Land League in 1879. Opposite to hotel is shown "The Hanging Tree" where Fr. Conroy was hung by the British authorities following "The Races of Castlebar." In 1798.

Did you know that "The Hanging Tree" was knocked down in a storm in 1918 on the night prior to the address of a mass Sinn Féin rally in which Eamon De Valera addressed the crowd?

Did you know that Castlebar Infirmary was situated to the left of Protestant church (On the site now occupied by Aras an Chontae) prior to the erection of Mayo General Hospital?

That Dr. Anthony Mac Bride (brother of Major John Mac Bride, executed in 1916) was resident surgeon here during the civil war period?
