Galway Journal for Mayo Schools

The Galway Archaeological and Historical Society (GAHS) has presented a CD-ROM containing the first 55 volumes of their journal to all post-primary schools in County Mayo.  The society was founded in 1900 and produced 55 volumes to 2003.

The presentation was made recently by Mr. Bernard O’Hara, President of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, to Ms. Bernie Rowland, chairperson of the Mayo Education Centre, who accepted the CD-ROMS on behalf of the post-primary schools in Co. Mayo.

Mr. Bernard O’Hara in his address stated: ‘The journal of the GAHS is an essential work of reference for anyone researching Irish history and archaeology, especially for material relating to the West of Ireland.  The publishing of the CD-ROM would not have been possible without the dedicated and voluntary work of successive committees, journal editors and contributors over the years.  It is most appropriate that this venerable society should have availed of the most recent technology to bring the scholarship of many great minds over the years to new generations of scholars in a very accessible mode.  The society is delighted to be able to provide a copy for each post-primary school in County Mayo.’

Dr. Diarmuid O Cearbhaill, Editor of the Journal, stated that the CD-ROM is a valuable source for historical research and stated that it is being sold to non-members of the society for €70 and €100 for libraries (contact: Kieran.hoare@nuigalway.ie, and membership, Delo Collier at dccoll@eircom.net).  Mr. Kieran Hoare, secretary, and Professor Noel Wilkins, Committee member, also attended the presentation. Mr. Denis O’Boyle, Director of the Mayo Education Centre, thanked the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society for their generosity, which will be appreciated by all Mayo post-primary schools.
